Appalachian State Mountaineers Halloween helmets feel almost unfairly suited to the assignment.
Black and gold already look at home after dark. Add mountain folklore, a rugged Mountaineer identity, autumn in the Appalachians and a few things that probably shouldn't be wandering through the woods after midnight, and there is plenty for Halloween to work with.
These nine concepts take App State from Boone into a darker corner of The Sovereign Vault, where pumpkins glow, ghosts drift across helmets, the Mountaineer refuses to stay buried and the mountains themselves start looking considerably less welcoming.

Appalachian State is one of 138 FBS programs entering The Sovereign Vault's Halloween helmet collection. Every school receives nine original concept designs, creating a complete collection of 1,242 haunted helmets.
The 9 Appalachian State Halloween Helmet Concepts
A blazing jack-o'-lantern takes over the black shell, its carved grin burning orange against Appalachian State's gold. The block A remains beside it, making this the collection's most immediate collision between App State football and Halloween night.
The Mountaineer has apparently been roaming these hills for considerably longer than expected. A skeletal figure in a wide-brimmed hat dominates the shell while black-and-gold details keep the design rooted firmly in Appalachian State territory.
A white ghost sweeps across the black helmet with a dark Appalachian landscape visible behind it. It's simple, immediately Halloween and especially effective against App State's naturally dark color palette.
A dark stone entrance marked with App State imagery glows ominously from within. Rather than placing one giant monster on the helmet, this concept turns the shell itself into a location — and whatever is waiting through that doorway probably isn't selling game programs.
Another skeletal Mountaineer emerges from the darkness, this time surrounded by a glowing mountain-night atmosphere. The hat, gold details and rugged character make this one feel especially connected to the team's identity.
The familiar Appalachian State A looks as though it has been carved into an ancient stone wall. Cracked rock textures cover the shell, giving the helmet the appearance of something discovered rather than manufactured.
A dark feline creature prowls across a shadowy mountain landscape beside the Appalachian State A. The black-on-black treatment makes the creature appear to emerge from the shell only when the light catches it.
An ornate skull fills the side of the helmet, decorated with black-and-gold patterns and Appalachian State details. It's one of the most decorative concepts in the nine and turns the team's colors into full Halloween artwork.
A moonlit mountain landscape stretches across the shell beneath an orange Halloween sky. The Appalachian State A anchors the design while the scenery does most of the haunting — a fitting finish for a school whose mountain setting already gives Halloween plenty to work with.
Why Appalachian State Works So Well for Halloween
Some college football teams require a little imagination before their identity starts working as Halloween artwork.
Appalachian State isn't one of them.
The black-and-gold palette already gives the helmets a dark foundation, while the Mountaineer identity opens the door to rugged characters, old mountain imagery, forests, moonlit ridges and folklore-inspired horror.
The strongest concepts don't simply paste a pumpkin onto an App State helmet. They make the mountains part of the story.
From Boone to the Haunted Mountains
There are several different directions represented in these nine helmets. #1 and #3 lean heavily into instantly recognizable Halloween imagery. #2 and #5 turn the Mountaineer himself into the horror element.
Then there are the designs that use Appalachian State's surroundings. The mountain scenes of #7 and #9 feel particularly natural because they don't require the school's identity to be replaced. They simply imagine the High Country after the sun disappears and Halloween takes over.
Even #6 takes a different route, transforming the App State logo into something ancient and weathered rather than surrounding it with monsters.
That's what we want from this collection: nine helmets that belong to the same school without looking like somebody hit copy and paste nine times.
