A Football League That Challenged the NFL
Donald Trump purchased the New Jersey Generals in September 1983, before the team's 1984 season. The Generals competed in the United States Football League, an alternative professional league that played its games in the spring.
The Generals played at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Their roster included Herschel Walker and, later, quarterback Doug Flutie.
Trump advocated moving the USFL to a fall schedule, putting it into direct competition with the NFL. The league played its final season in 1985 and never began the planned 1986 fall campaign.
The USFL subsequently won an antitrust lawsuit against the NFL, but the jury awarded only one dollar in damages, which was trebled to three dollars under antitrust law.
Our R004 card reimagines this era through three fictional relic fragments: helmet paint, a Generals game ticket, and football leather. Their descriptions can be read in the parchment window above.
This collectible card and all three relic fragments are fictional concept art. They are not authenticated memorabilia, recovered historical artifacts, genuine football equipment, manufactured products, or items offered for sale.
