Inauguration Day: January 20, 2017

On the West Front of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., Donald Trump took the presidential oath of office on January 20, 2017. Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath, formally beginning Trump's first term as president.

The ceremony followed the 2016 presidential election, in which Trump defeated Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in the Electoral College. It marked the transition from President Barack Obama's administration to the incoming Trump administration.

During his inaugural address, Trump outlined an agenda emphasizing national interests, manufacturing, infrastructure, and his "America First" approach. He described a transfer of power from Washington's political establishment to the American people.

The ceremony included longstanding presidential traditions, including the oath of office, inaugural address, congressional luncheon, and inaugural parade. Melania Trump stood alongside her husband during the swearing-in ceremony.

The inauguration marked the beginning of an administration whose policies and political style would become subjects of extensive public discussion and debate.

Our R008 concept card imagines three symbolic fragments from the occasion: a commemorative program, red tie fabric, and a navy-blue ceremonial drape. The parchment reader explains the inspiration behind each one.

CREATING THE IMPOSSIBLE

INAUGURATION DAY · JANUARY 20, 2017

The Story

On January 20, 2017, Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States, taking the oath of office on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath of office, formally beginning Trump's first presidential term. The ceremony marked the peaceful transfer of executive power from the Obama administration.

In his inaugural address, Trump outlined an agenda centered on national renewal, economic growth, and the "America First" approach.

The inauguration included longstanding presidential traditions, from the oath and inaugural address to the congressional luncheon and parade.

Imagined Relic 01 · Inaugural Program Fragment

A small, torn piece of commemorative paper bearing the year 2017, inspired by the printed programs and ceremonial materials associated with the inauguration.

The fictional paper fragment symbolizes the documentation and ceremony of a presidential transition. It is not an original inaugural program or recovered historical document.

Imagined Relic 02 · Red Tie Fabric Fragment

A tiny red fabric swatch inspired by the necktie Donald Trump wore during the inauguration ceremony.

The imagined fragment represents the clothing associated with this public occasion. It is not authentic fabric from Trump's tie or any actual presidential garment.

Imagined Relic 03 · Ceremony Drape Fragment

A small, frayed piece of navy-blue fabric symbolizing the ceremonial decorations at the United States Capitol on Inauguration Day.

The fictional fabric evokes the setting of the ceremony. It was not removed from the Capitol, the inaugural platform, or any historical installation.

Creating the Impossible

The 45th President transforms a documented moment in American political history into an imagined museum-style collectible.

Its three symbolic fragments represent the printed record of the inauguration, the clothing of its central figure, and the ceremonial setting.

Together, they create an artistic interpretation of January 20, 2017, without claiming to contain genuine materials from that day.

FICTIONAL CONCEPT ARTWORK. This large-print reader is an accessible editorial presentation of the card's story, not a word-for-word transcription of the small lettering in the illustration. All three relic fragments are fictional. They are not authenticated memorabilia, recovered historical artifacts, actual presidential clothing, manufactured products, or items for sale.
