A New Branch of the Armed Forces
On December 20, 2019, President Donald Trump signed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020 at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.
The legislation established the United States Space Force, the country's sixth armed service branch and the first new U.S. military branch since the creation of the Air Force in 1947.
The Space Force was established within the Department of the Air Force, much as the Marine Corps operates within the Department of the Navy. It is a separate armed service with its own leadership and military personnel.
Its responsibilities include organizing, training, and equipping forces for military operations in space, protecting critical space capabilities, and supporting national defense missions.
Satellites are essential to modern military communications, navigation, missile warning, and intelligence. The creation of a dedicated space service reflected the growing importance of these systems to national security.
The decision generated debate over military organization, cost, and whether a new branch was the best way to address challenges in space. Supporters argued that it would strengthen focus and readiness; critics questioned the need for an additional service bureaucracy.
The Sovereign Vault's R010 concept card interprets this event through three symbolic fragments: a presidential signing pen, a piece of the legislation, and military uniform fabric.
