A Meeting That Made History
On June 12, 2018, Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un met at the Capella hotel on Sentosa Island, Singapore. It was the first summit between a sitting American president and a North Korean leader.
The meeting followed a period of heightened tensions over North Korea's nuclear and missile programs. The two leaders discussed relations between their countries, security on the Korean Peninsula, and denuclearization.
Trump and Kim held meetings, appeared together before cameras, and signed a joint statement. The statement included broad commitments concerning new U.S.–North Korea relations, peace on the Korean Peninsula, and work toward denuclearization.
The encounter was a notable diplomatic breakthrough in terms of direct leader-level contact. However, the signed statement did not establish a detailed, verifiable timetable for nuclear disarmament.
The summit's lasting significance remains debated. Supporters emphasized the opening of direct dialogue; critics questioned whether the commitments were sufficiently specific or enforceable.
The Sovereign Vault's R009 card interprets this event through three imagined fragments, representing the ceremony, the meeting setting, and the document signed by the leaders.
